According to a recent article on CareerBuilder.com, the most recession proof jobs are clustered among five major industries. The good news is that these industries include a wide variety of jobs. So if you’re a database administrator, for example, you can help recession-proof your job by working for a hospital instead of a manufacturing firm. The five most recession-proof industries are:

· Education
· Energy
· Environmental Sector
· Health Care
· Security

Of course, the most recession-proof job for YOU may be the one you have right now. If you have several years of outstanding performance at your company and are appropriately paid for your position (check Salary.com if you’re not sure), you are at lower risk for a layoff than a new, poorly performing, overpaid employee would be. In addition, take a good look at your value to the company. Could the company eliminate your position without serious consequences? If so, start updating your resume and networking with friends at other companies just to see what opportunities are out there.

If you sense that your company is in immediate financial trouble, you may want to find another job now so you can avoid unemployment later. Posting your resume on a high-traffic site like Monster.com is a good place to start.

You can lessen your exposure to the recession just by moving to a different area of the country. Forbes magazine did a recent feature on America’s most recession proof cities. They considered factors such as unemployment rates, housing prices, foreclosure rates, and job growth.

The top locations are:

1- Austin, Texas
2- Oklahoma City, Okla.
3- Honolulu, Hawaii
4- Portland, Ore.
5- Tulsa, Okla.
6- Virginia Beach, Va.
7- Seattle, Wash.
8- Baltimore, Md.
9- Boston, Mass.
10- Lancaster, Pa.

Moving to another city is a serious decision that should not be taken lightly. If you are considering a move, here are some questions to ask yourself. If you own a home now, what are market conditions like for selling it? What are the job prospects in the new city for your particular skills? How far is the city from your extended family? If you have children, how are the public schools? How is the air quality? What is the crime rate?

Here are some additional resources to help you make the move:

If you’re moving because you neeed hourly employment, SnagAJob.com is one site that has real, legitimate job openings for major national employers like Hope Depot, Marriott Hotels, Domino’s, Kohl’s, TJ Maxx and more. Just enter the zip code of your city (or the city you want to move to) to see what’s available.

To learn more about the quality of schools in your targeted area, check out GreatSchools.net

If you want to own a home in your new city, sites like RealtyTrac can help you find foreclosure and pre-foreclosure homes at a big discount.
